Extreme lightweight construction using magnesium – presented at the Baden-Württemberg Lightweight Construction Center’s digital event

09.06.2026

As part of a digital expert forum organized by the Baden-Württemberg Lightweight Construction Center (LBZ-BW) https://www.lbz-bw.de/ —of which ELB is a member—our Managing Director, Dr. Anna Buling, gave a presentation on the topic “Rethinking Material Limits: High-Performance Surfaces for the Light Metal Industry of Tomorrow.”

The focus was on our ULRACERAMIC®, which helps to significantly expand the range of applications for lightweight metals such as aluminum and magnesium. Using current developments and real-world industrial examples, we demonstrated how this innovative plasma-ceramic coating improves wear and corrosion protection, unlocks new potential for lightweight and multi-material designs, and simultaneously contributes to the sustainability of components and products.

In addition, the resource-efficient and recycling-friendly aspects of this process were presented, which meet the growing demands for performance, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.

The presentation highlighted the central role of surface technology in the further development of innovative lightweight construction solutions. Through discussions with representatives from industry and research, participants were able to jointly explore current challenges, technological trends, and future areas of application.
