ELB at the 18th Biometal Symposium in Andalusia
13.10.2026
From August 24 to 29, 2026, ELB participated in the 18th Symposium on Biodegradable Metals in Conil de la Frontera, Andalusia, Spain.
As part of the symposium, our colleague presented how surface technologies can help to specifically control the degradation behavior of magnesium implants. The presentation focused on the application of ULTRACERAMIC® for bioresorbable magnesium-based screws.
Magnesium offers promising opportunities for medical technology. The material combines suitable mechanical properties with the ability to gradually degrade biologically after implantation. At the same time, controlling the degradation process remains a key challenge. An implant must maintain its mechanical stability for as long as it is required to support bone healing – and then degrade in a controlled manner.
This is where ELB’s surface technology comes into play. With ULTRACERAMIC®, ELB develops defined ceramic surfaces with high corrosion and wear resistance. Within the MagImp research project, this expertise was successfully transferred to bioresorbable magnesium screws in collaboration with Königsee Implantate and TU Dortmund University.
The aim of the project was to specifically influence the stability and degradation behavior of the implants, thereby opening up new possibilities for the use of magnesium in medical technology.
The symposium also provided an excellent platform for intensive scientific exchange. In addition to expert presentations, open discussions, poster sessions, and the exchange of ideas on new approaches and future developments in the field of biodegradable metals were at the heart of the event.
We are delighted to contribute to this exciting research with our ULTRACERAMIC®.
