ELB at the SMT35 Conference
20 September 2023
September 18 – September 22, 2023 in Hamburg, Germany
Taking place this week in Hamburg, as part of the 35th Conference on Surface Modification Technologies (SMT35), our colleague Mr. Tiwari will give a talk about “Development of ceramic coatings on Mg-based screw implants for orthopedic application via plasma electrolytic oxidation process".

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are promising biomaterials for functional bone tissue support and regeneration. Mg has bioresorbable, biodegradable, and biocompatible properties, degrading with time without causing toxicity. It also has good mechanical properties like low density and elastic modulus. However, its rapid corrosion rate and degradation in an in-vivo atmosphere may cause early fractures before complete bone healing. To overcome this, a ceramic surface refinement on Mg-based screw implants using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) has been developed. The research investigates the microstructure, chemical composition, and surface properties of PEO coatings using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and laser scanning microscopy (LSM). Results show significant improvements in corrosion behavior and mechanical performance.
